Getting An Opossum Out of the Wall
You hear the noises and you know the problem – there is an opossum somewhere in your walls. It is scratching and climbing around, potentially getting stuck in there.
You could let it go to see if it gets out on its own, or you could try to get it out yourself. Getting it out yourself is the best bet here, as it ensures the opossum is gone and you can seal up its entry hole fully.
With the risks to you, your property, and the opossum, you want to do this as soon as possible. Waiting too long could lead to harm and damage, with the most likely result being the opossum dying in your wall.
Finding the Opossum
Find where you can hear the opossum best. Listen for its scurrying and climbing, trying to pinpoint its exact location.
For dead opossums, you can do about the same, but for smell. A dead opossum is not going to move around, obviously, so it is easier to pin its location to a single part of the wall.
Try to keep tabs on where the opossum is. If you know it has not moved at all, it is going to be much easier for you to remove yourself. If it does move around and leave, you are going to have a harder time.

Getting Into the Wall
When the opossum is stuck in the wall and you want it out immediately, you will have to cut into the wall.
Find the location of the opossum and cut a hole close to where it is. With the hole cut, you should be able to see where the opossum is in your wall.
Wearing protective gear and with a cage or bag in hand, grab and remove the opossum. If you see any babies, remove them, too.
If you do not feel comfortable with this, you may be able to find services that can do this for you.
Trapping
If you know the opossum is leaving the wall at night, you can try trapping around the attic. This will catch the opossum without having to cut holes in walls or handle the animal physically. Opossums are easy to trap so, as long as it is leaving the wall, this is doable.
You do not want an opossum stuck in your wall. The moment that is the case, find and remove it immediately before anything goes wrong.
