Hillsboro Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
How Do I Keep Opossums Out Of My Garden?
Opossums are omnivores, meaning they will eat almost anything. Backyard and outdoor gardens seem to be an open invitation for these scavengers. When left to their own devices, opossums can decimate a garden.
They love to eat fruits and vegetables. They also find all the insects in the garden quite tasty. It is best to take a proactive approach to discourage opossums before they create a problem. This means making sure there is no easy place to shelter near your garden.
First, pick up any rotting fruits and vegetables. People often leave these things to fertilize the soil. However, the smell of rotting food or plants is what attracts opossums in the first place. Ensure that all garbage and compost is secured and preferably out of reach.
It is also a good idea to get rid of any types of brush piles in the yard. Opossums are not picky. They will move into any space that suits them. You may find them under a porch or even a wood pile.
Opossums are nocturnal so they are most active at night. You will rarely catch them in the act. They do their best work when you are sleeping.
Protecting the Garden Itself
There are a number of steps you can take to protect your garden from opossums. Fencing is a great option. To be effective, fencing must be at least four feet or taller and should be bent outward at the top. This prevents the animals from climbing over the top. Some people use electric fencing. This is very effective, but it can be pricey.
Another effective method involves chili pepper or cayenne pepper. Opossums don’t like the way it tastes, and it won’t hurt plants. It doesn’t hurt the animal either, but it will repel them. You can sprinkle it over your vegetables or dissolve some in a spray bottle with water.
If you have a dog or cat, save their hair after brushing. Opossums steer clear of predators but can get aggressive if they feel cornered. Letting your pet loose on an opossum is never a good idea. However, you can put their hair in small mesh bags and drop them around the garden perimeter.
One last very effective method involves an automatic sprinkler. You must water your garden anyway. A motion activated sprinkler will cut on when the animal gets close. It is usually effective enough to drive the creatures away without hurting them. Once the animal has failed to get a meal a few times, it will stop coming back.
